In Japan, there is a centuries-old tradition of admiring sakura – hanami, which originated at the imperial court during the Heian period (794–1185), when aristocrats gathered under flowering trees, wrote poetry, and drank sake. Sakura has become one of the main symbols of Japanese culture precisely because of the fleeting nature of its flowering: the trees remain in full bloom for only a few days, after which the petals begin to fall. Today, Japanese people have picnics under the sakura trees, follow the “blooming front” across the country, and night hanami – yozakura, when the trees are illuminated by lanterns and the pink flowers literally glow in the dark, is particularly atmospheric.
In Ukraine, sakura mainly blooms in the west of the country – in Uzhhorod, entire streets turn into pink alleys. In Kyiv, it is customary to visit the botanical garden to see the sakura. Even if aesthetic entertainment such as contemplating sakura does not fit into your plans, you can always make time to discover fantastically beautiful “pink” fragrances that embody the beauty of pearlescent sculpted petals.
In all these perfumes, sakura sounds different – from a transparent watercolor flower to a rich almond blossom. This is not surprising: the actual scent of sakura is very delicate, so perfumers almost always “add” to it using notes of almond, powder, greenery, musk, or amaretto.
Sakura, Ormonde Jayne
In Sakura by Ormonde Jayne, sakura sounds as if rain-heavy petals have carpeted the wet stones of a picturesque wild garden. A very English interpretation of sakura – aristocratic and monumental.
If this perfume were a time of day, it would absolutely be morning, when clear light begins to peek through the cool morning mist. Jasmine transparency, delicate pink pollen, white musk, a hint of green aquatic notes, the fluffiness of mimosa, and an almond haze. But the main thing is that this fragrance has almost no perfumery weight: it hovers around the wearer like a halo – it is not so much inhaled as felt around.
This is one of those fragrances that may seem too quiet on the first test, but then begins to radiate calming waves.
Blossom Love, Amouage
Blossom Love is a very emotional and somewhat unrestrained sakura, with hints of amaretto. It also has something of Japanese desserts: cherry nectar, almond cookies, vanilla cream, but paradoxically, Blossom Love skillfully balances on the verge of gourmand fragrances without becoming a dessert. This is facilitated by ylang-ylang and warm woody cashmere combined in the “heart”.
It has a very beautiful contrast: it is simultaneously girlish and mature. That is why Blossom Love is often liked even by people who generally dislike “pink” fragrances.
Aqua Allegoria Flora Cherrysia, Guerlain
Flora Cherrysia is an olfactory embodiment of a sakura branch, but in the format of an effervescent floral cologne. The most carefree and sunny fragrance in the selection, Flora Cherrysia sparkles like a rosé in a crystal glass in a garden in early summer. The sakura in it is very fruity and watery: watermelon, pear, pink flowers, white musk. A kind of idealized image of a spring girl.
