“Wuthering Heights”, Emily Brontë

The novel “Wuthering Heights” by Emily Brontë has been reissued by “КСД” publishing house, and now is the perfect time to read it, as the film of the same name starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi will be released in Ukrainian cinemas from February 12. A typical novel of the mid-19th century usually told a touching love story between children from two neighboring Victorian estates. In the end, they would get married and live happily ever after, and their families would visit each other in aristocratic idyll. In “Wuthering Heights,” Emily Brontë departs from the canon of the time and makes a true anti-hero the central character — Heathcliff, cruel and vengeful, who is in a complicated love relationship with Cathy. The couple experiences tragic love and various trials of fate, and immersing yourself in their passionate story will be incredibly exciting.

“The Men’s Room”, Philippe Besson

The sensual novel by French writer Philippe Besson tells the love story between a soldier and an aristocratic teenager. The events unfold in Paris in 1916, on the eve of World War I. The protagonist, the romantic sixteen-year-old Vincent, falls in love with the French soldier Arthur Vales and meets the famous writer Marcel Proust. The relationship between the soldier and the teenager largely exists in letters — it is there, between the lines filled with sensual secrets and revelations of first passion for the French infantryman, that his path to maturity begins.

“The Ladies’ Paradise”, Émile Zola

In the novel “The Ladies’ Paradise,” Émile Zola with all his expressiveness tells about the development of retail trade, competition, and love. Here you will learn about the traps that unsuspecting department store customers so easily fall into. At the same time, it is a touching love story of a simple saleswoman from the provinces for the owner of a large and luxurious store, a prototype of which can still be admired today by visiting the Parisian department store Printemps. Both the setting and one of the main characters of the novel is Paris: its reconstruction, farewell to the musty past, and the opening of spaces for the future. The novel has been adapted into five feature films and series, so it undoubtedly deserves attention.
