Even a costly plane ticket doesn’t guarantee a pleasant journey if you choose your seat poorly. Aviation experts and frequent flyers point out that many in-flight discomforts stem not from the airline itself, but from errors passengers make before boarding.

This information comes from Travel + Leisure.

Specialists have outlined the seven most frequent seat selection blunders that can lead passengers to noisy areas, cramped spaces, or even seats without the promised window view.

One of the most significant oversights, according to experts, is when a passenger allows the airline to assign a seat automatically. While this may seem like the simplest approach, it often results in middle seats, spots near lavatories or galleys, or those in the rear of the aircraft.

Travelers note that many individuals don’t bother to review the cabin layout before booking. However, a few minutes spent examining the seating chart can help locate quieter rows, avoid high-traffic zones, and select a more comfortable spot for a long-haul flight.

Additionally, experts strongly advise against overlooking details on the seat map. This is where you can spot seats with limited recline or those situated close to restrooms. Jesse Neugarten, founder and CEO of Dollar Flight Club, explains that the cabin map is one of the most valuable pre-flight tools, capable of greatly enhancing your travel comfort.

According to Jimmy Yun, a travel expert and loyalty program specialist at point.me, passengers also frequently book window seats without realizing that on some aircraft, the window may be offset or partially obstructed by the cabin structure. Consequently, you might end up seated next to a wall rather than having a clear view.

Another common pitfall is checking in too late online. Experts explain that many airlines release additional or previously reserved seats only after check-in opens. This can sometimes make better rows or seats closer to the front of the plane available. Jimmy Yun emphasizes that most airlines open online check-in approximately 24 hours before departure, and this is when passengers can still improve their seat selection.

Specialists also caution against so-called “ideal” seats that, in reality, possess hidden drawbacks. For instance, rows near emergency exits typically offer more legroom but often have fixed armrests and restricted seat recline. The rearmost rows of the plane are also cited as problematic due to galley noise, constant passenger traffic, and minimal comfort.

Furthermore, experts recommend paying attention to the specific aircraft model before booking a seat. Neugarten notes that the same row can be very comfortable on one carrier and inconvenient on another due to differing cabin configurations and seat spacing.

Another mistake is overpaying for seats when it’s not necessary, or conversely, completely forgoing paid upgrades even on lengthy journeys. Experts suggest that for short flights, more expensive seats may not always justify the cost, whereas on longer routes, extra space can significantly contribute to comfort.

Passengers are also advised not to hesitate to ask for a different seat upon boarding. Jimmy Yun mentions that gate agents can sometimes reassign passengers to seats with more legroom or in a more comfortable row if suitable options remain available.

We previously reported that flight attendants warned passengers about a seat on the plane that might be dirtier than it appears.
